Official Departure of the Bühl-Calarasi Cyclists

On Friday 27th June at 08:00, Horst Spitzmesser's team will leave Bühl Kirchplatz for their long ride to Calarasi. Lord-Mayor Hans Striebel will send off the 26-strong team on their 2100km ride to the twin-town in Moldova. On the first stage, they will be joined by District Administrator Jürgen Bäuerle and Mayor Hubert Schnurr. Bühl Police will escort the cyclists, together with their truck and support vehicle out of the town. Eagerly awaited is the timely arrival of Petru Putuntic from Calarasi, so that he can accompany the Bühl cyclists on the ride to his home town, also by bicycle! It would be a wonderful gesture if as many people as possible could be present at the start of this honorary and humanitarian action by the cyclists. Dave Barrett, the local motorcyclist who determined the route last year will be in attendance, selling his book to raise further funds for the project.

From the 27th June until 11th July, the Bühl cyclists will be pedalling their way to Calarasi in Moldova to deliver donated funds to the orphanage there. Afterwards, they'll continue pedalling until they reach the Black Sea. The complete tour takes them through five different countries..

We’re off to Moldova in three weeks …

“That will be an enormous challenge for us”.  Horst Spitzmesser remains a picture of calm when he talks about the 27th June.  On this Friday morning, the Bühl cyclists will start to pedal.  Departure is at 08:00, and as many people as possible should wave at the courageous cyclists and wish them “Good Luck”.  A distance of around 2100 kilometres through five countries lies before them.  They want to reach Bühl’s twin-town Calarasi on 18th July, with the maximum possible donation sum for the orphanage there in their luggage.  “We are still collecting as hard as possible and hope that many will make an effort and transfer some money”.  Until now, around 20,000 Euros are in the account.  Every Cent goes directly into the “Overall orphanage refurbishment” project.

Exceptional action

Last year Dave Barrett from Bühl rode his motorcycle to Calarasi.  Using his experience,  the route for the cyclists could be optimised.   He has now written a book “Dodging Potholes - Motorcycling in Eastern Europe” with all proceeds from the book being donated to the orphanage.

NEW!  "Dodging Potholes", the book written by Dave Barrett is now available!

Dave Barrett rode his motorcycle from Bühl to Calarasi in 2007 to determine the route for the cyclists.  He was also asked by Bühl town council to provide an independent report on the current state of the orphanage.

He was so moved by his experience in the orphanage that he decided he wanted to make a personal contribution, which he has now done by writing a book about motorcycling in Eastern Europe, naturally including the ride from Bühl to Calarasi and back.  All proceeds from the sale of this book will go directly to the orphanage to improve the life of the children there.
